The Stuff
Personal Branding Project Exercise
Who doesn’t love ice cream? That’s the question 1985 cult classic horror film The Stuff both asks and answers in 90 minutes. It’s a ridiculous movie about alien ice cream that comes to life and attacks people. More importantly, the packaging design of the movie is super eye catching. I thought it would be fun to take a run at it myself, by updating the design to reflect what modern ice cream packaging usually looks like. The Stuff wants to know, are you eating it or is it eating you?
Part of what inspired me to make this project was the phenomenal wordmark the original packaging used. I kept the wordmark as is, since I think it’s simply too beautiful to change. Everything else around it is what I changed instead!
I also created a smooth splat mark to use on the packaging.
I used the fonts All Round Gothic and Neuzeit Grotesk to convey the classic chunky fonts of the 80’s but updated for modern audiences. I kept the pink purple from the original branding but removed the brown, as the 80’s used a lot of brown but that’s no longer really in style.
A big part of this project was also just showcasing the original design next to mine, so I could show what I changed versus what I kept. I had a great time applying my label designs to these packaging mockups. Lastly, I have a looping animation to show the transition from old to new! Eat up!
When it comes to both art and ice cream, enough is never enough!
