Stonehearst Asylum Horror Movie Poster
Deliverables: Three Posters

Art Direction: Sean McCabe

Stonehearst Asylum is an underrated gothic horror movie adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s short story “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether”, and it was so fun to make my own poster for it! I included sketches to show my process and progress from idea to completion.
The Automatic’s Not Accepted Anywhere Album Cover
Deliverables: Album Cover and Sticker

Art Direction: Sean McCabe

I got to redesign and illustrate one of my favorite albums, which is “Not Accepted Anywhere” by The Automatic, a Welsh rock band. I drew a Gwyllgi (pronounced like gwishkee), known as the Welsh “dog of darkness” and an omen of death. I imagined what it would be like to be stared down by the canine face of death at night and illustrated based on that. The sticker I designed to be put on it is a Celtic dog symbol. This band hasn’t released music in almost a decade, but I felt they deserved some artistic recognition.

I also belive this album cover marked a turning point in my illustration work. I learned to let loose, be weird, and just have fun with it. By trying to capture the feel of the music, I was also starting to develop a new style. One that combines the terrifing and surreal with a sense of fun and excitement. Rock on, death dog, rock on.

America the Grave
A music video by West Philadelphia Orchestra

Record Label: The Giving Groove

Illustrator: Keni Thomas

I was recently fortunate enough to be the animator for West Philadelphia Orchestra’s latest music video, Amerika the Grave. Written as a protest song for Black Lives Matter, no project I’ve ever been a part of feels as important as this one. The illustrations were created by Philadelphia local Keni Thomas. :
The Nutcracker Concept Art
Deliverables: Four Character Sheets and Two Full Set/Background Designs

Art Direction: Sean McCabe

My mother and I have seen The Nutcracker every year of my life since I was a toddler (when I was actually in it). So it felt like my life came full circle when I got to redesign the ballet by making concept art for a fictional stop-motion animated movie about it. In my typical fashion, though, it infused some horror into it. So I imagined what it would be like if Clara had to fight everyone in the Land of Sweets.

Clara: This version of Clara wears the pants in the relationship. Literally. I liked the idea of keeping her in pajamas but updating them so she could reasonably fight off monsters in them. Ergo, she gets pants with pockets. And a ponytail- who can fight with ringlets in their face?

The Nutcracker: Personal collection of Nutcrackers aside, I wanted to change the way the Nutcracker prince looked to be just as weird as everything else around him. This little guy is full of spirit and wants to protect, but is having a hard time measuring up. Literally.

The Mouse King: I liked that the original version of the Mouse King had multiple heads, so I decided to bring that back and make him the Eldritch horror he was always meant to be. Maybe he’s a lab experiment gone wrong? Either way, those claws look sharp.

The Sugar Plum Fairy: I liked the idea of making the Sugar Plum Fairy out of candy, and utilising the idea that as she shows her evil side she turns goopier and literally rots. She has a fake, sugar-coated outside covering the sinister within. Do not mess with her.

Holiday Social Media Animation Series (Play Us On Loop!)
Deliverables: Three Animated Instagram Looping Videos

Art Direction: Jennifer Kowalsi

One of the best things about being partially Southern? The food. I animated these short videos for Instagram based specifically on North Carolinian food holidays.  Each one corresponds to different parts of the day. So the Sweet Tea is in the morning, Pulled Pork is in the afternoon, and Banana Pudding is at night. I pulled and edited music from the soundtrack to the play The Arsonists by Jacqueline Goldfinger.
Simpsons Treehouse of Horror
Deliverables: Three Animated GIFS

Art Direction: Brian Cassidy

My family has loved The Simpsons for as long as I can remember. We quote it constantly. Especially their Halloween episodes, the Treehouse of Horror series. It was super exciting to animate short GIFs based on one of my favorite episodes from that. I chose Treehouse of Horror Episode IV: “The Devil and Homer Simpson”, “Bart Simpson’s Dracula”, and recurring characters Kang and Kodos.
Micro UX/UI Animation Series
Deliverables: Three Animated GIFS

Art Direction: Brian Cassidy

I designed and animated these various micro-animations to be clean, fluid, and fun. The motion is slower than it would realistically be so that the animation can be seen fully. I tried thinking of new ways to imagine the way micro ux/ui could be. I think it’d be cool if an app used Newton’s Cradle for their loading screen, but maybe I’m just a nerd.
Narrative Illustration Series
Deliverables: Three Illustrations

Art Direction: Sean McCabe

For this three part narrative illustration series, I built a story around a monster I made up named Kevin. It’s about a Victorian sea voyage gone wrong, told through the perspective of the captain’s desk and journal. The three journals read as follows:

Captain’s Log 10.07.40: It’s shaping up to be a good voyage this turnaround. Sunny skies and clear nights as far as Wilson’s concerned. Even the crew is wide-eyed and fresh-faced, and ready to get going. It’s nice to have most of the usual people, and I know I can trust Kevin and Henry to manage everyone else. Maria said she’d miss me, but she has Claudette to keep her company. (Reminder to self: find Claudette the perfect shell.) If all goes smoothly, we should be at our destination in a little over two months. I forgot how much I miss the sea air.

Captain’s Log 11.03.40: I can’t find Henry anywhere. Wilson said the crew is itching to turn around, but we can’t. If we return to port, it’s more than just my job on the line. He’s worried about mutiny, but that’s hardly an issue yet… But there’s something wrong with Kevin. I don’t know how to describe it, but he’s acting all funny. I think I can hear clicking noises coming from inside of him and he’s moving faster than should be possible. I no longer feel like I can trust anyone to tell me the truth. I feel like I’m constantly being watched, but I’m ready in case anything happens. Oh, yes, I’m ready…

Captain’s Log 11.29.40: Hardly anyone is left. Rations are empty. All is lost. I’ve barred the door, but it doesn’t matter anymore. He will be coming for me soon. Maria, Claudette, I love you. It’s too late for me. It’s too late It’s too late It’s too late It’s too late It’s too late It’s too late It’s too la-
