Attack the Block

Deliverables: Animated Movie Titles

Art Direction: Brian Cassidy

Attack the Block is one of my favorite movies of all time. It’s funny, violent, and has an amazing soundtrack (everybody please say thank you to Basement Jaxx and Steven Price). I had the honor of animating a movie title sequence for it (also: spoilers!!!).

I used fonts that felt futuristic and had their own sense of movement within them- something that would make the characters say, “That’s it, bruv!” The colors are understated greens, blues, and grays so that when there was blood, you would not miss it.

I chose a simple and cartoonish style for the characters and backgrounds because I felt the core of this animation was the story being told as well as the transitions.

Everything was created to fit the flow of the music and really make watchers feel like they were watching a mini version of the movie itself. I wanted to highlight what I felt were important moments, motifs, and character beats. The idea is that this would play after the movie, so watchers could go, “Hey, I remember that!” People love being able to say that.

Attack the Block is a seriously underrated movie and I hope this animation encourages people to discover how amazing it is (seriously, go watch it!).
