Deliverables: Magazine spreads
Art Direction: Bryan Satalino
If there’s one ridiculously specific aesthetic I enjoy, it’s 80’s vaporwave. So when we got to choose an artist to do magazine spreads for in Typography, I jumped at the chance to talk about James White, an incredible artist and inspiration.

I noticed that James White often had accents of pink, so I made hot pink the color for quote callouts. I also used navy and peach so as to make the bright pink stand out even more.
Although the featured artist’s style is from another decade, I wanted the masthead/logo of this magazine to feel more rooted in this century.

I used clean sans serifs Gotham and Freight Sans to heighten readability and contrast with the blocky and metallic look of the article’s title.
I felt like James White’s work wouldn’t fit any of the delicate serifs you often see used in magazines. He’s strong and bold, all the way.

I made the layout around the artwork, by molding each page around the flow of each image. I wanted big geometric shapes to help make James White’s work be the focal point of the article. I also used that ideology when creating the table of contents, to make it feel more unique.
It was so fun to showcase the work of someone I admire. The 80’s called, and they want their magazine back!
