Party at the Piers: Alchemy
Deliverables: App Prototype, Invitation, Snapchat Filter
Art Direction: Jennifer Kowalski
Gold and I are close friends, so this project was perfect. I designed an invitation for a formal event at San Francisco’s Exploratorium (a science museum) to match the magical aesthetic of alchemy.
I based the logo on alchemy transmutation circles (about turning one thing into another). Science is basically the real life version of transmutation.
I even updated the museum logo to fit the theme. It helped that a big motif of their logo is already a circle!
I used dark navy with gold accents for both contrast and elegance, and a slab serif (Poynter Oldstyle) to modernize the ancient feel of alchemy.
The heart of the app is the logo acting as a compass throughout the different pages. As users click on different pages, the words and circles will spin opposite directions from each other, like a real compass. The app is used to house all the information about the event as well as allow users to RSVP.
I made the physical invitation circular to match the logo and gold foiled everything so it could shine. I also got custom made wax seals of the logo to close the envelope and make the invitation feel legitimate. It also has the code to RSVP as well as the Snapchat filter.
I designed the filter to make users feel like they were being rained with golden sparkles to promote the event.
This project is one of my more elegant and delicate designs, and I look forward to using those extra wax seals in the future!
