Monty Python’s Flying Circus is a British sketch comedy series made by a bunch of idiots that somehow made it to air. In fact, it aired for over half a decade, despite almost being cancelled after the first episode. Some call it satire, some call it black comedy, and others call it balderdash.
The show was a tour de force of absurdity, gags, and jokes that would make your grandmother slap you. Five “actors” made up of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin dance around the screen interspersed with animations by the maniacal Terry Gilliam. Sketches never followed any particular order or logic, and it was a wonder the giant foot didn’t crush what meager plots were left behind.
No doubt about it, though, that the show and subsequent movies have influenced the way comedy and even British people go on. Current shows like Saturday Night Live wish they could have even a whiff of whatever those guys were sniffing. Now, as they like to say, shut up and let’s get on with it already!
